Lawlor body found in southern Chile
Monday, 7 January 2008 11:27
The body of Ronan Lawlor, the Co Laois man who went missing in Chile in November, has been found.
It is understood the body was found in a remote spot near the three towers mountain peaks in the centre of Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chile.
His family has said they are happy to be bringing the remains of their son home.
A spokesperson for the family said they wished to acknowledge the help and support from the Chilean authorities as well as the support from the public in Ireland and Chile.
In a statement to RTÉ News, the spokesperson added that the family was asking for their privacy to be respected at this time.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, Aidan Lawlor, a cousin of Ronan, described how the news was broken to the family.
'We received a 'phone call last night from the Department of Foreign Affairs at about eight o'clock,' he said.
'They just called us and relayed the news to us that a body had been found and that, in almost certainty, it's Ronan's body.'
The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware a body had been found, but added a formal identification has not yet taken place.
However, the department confirmed it had contacted the Lawlor family.
Mr Lawlor's body has been removed to the regional capital Punta Arenas for autopsy and formal identification.
A massive search operation was launched in Chile on 18 November when Mr Lawlor failed to keep up contact.
The search was later narrowed to a national park on the Argentinean/Chilean border. However, the search was called off last month.
